KUDOS OF THE MONTH: Child Abuse Network

SAFE HAVEN: CAN’s “teddy bear” waiting room was created, like other portions of the facility, to help children and families feel comforted and safe.

The Child Abuse Network (CAN) is celebrating 25 years of giving hope to more than 31,000 children in the Tulsa community.

Before CAN was created, children frequently endured stressful examinations and numerous interviews by various agencies, often in cold, sterile facilities, says Brandi Moore, CAN community relations manager.

CAN creates an effective alternative, bringing multiple agencies into one building to provide a safe and comforting environment for children in crisis. Medical, mental health, investigative and legal professionals are housed under one roof to provide less traumatic investigations and to determine whether child abuse has occurred.
“For an abused child, adjusting to life after abuse is difficult,” says Moore. “CAN helps stop the hurt and begin the healing.”

April is National Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month. CAN will host its third annual CANdlelight Ball on April 26 at the Mayo Hotel in honor of the awareness month. Sponsorships are available. For more information, visit www.childabusenetwork.org.
If you suspect a child is being abused or neglected, please call the Oklahoma Hotline: 800- 522-3511.
