St. John Owasso, 12451 E. 100th St. N., was recently named a Truven Health Top 100 Hospital, being the only hospital in Oklahoma to receive the recognition.

The Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals is a comprehensive, academically-driven study that evaluates clinical and operational performance in 11 areas, including inpatient mortality, 30-day mortality rate, complications, core measures, 30-day risk-adjusted readmission rate, severity-adjusted average length of stay, mean emergency room throughput, inpatient expense per discharge, Medicare spend per beneficiary, adjusted operating profit margin, and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) score (patient rating of overall hospital performance). The study has been conducted annually since 1993.

“Our focus is always on the patients, so the fact that this national organization affirms the outcome of our work is rewarding,” says Tim Hepner, MD, St. John Owasso chief medical officer.

To conduct the 100 Top Hospitals study, Truven Health researchers evaluated 2,740 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals. They used public information — Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MEDPAR) data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website. St. John Owasso was measured against 826 other U.S. hospitals as part of the small community hospital category (25 to 99 beds).  Hospitals do not apply for awards, and winners do not pay to market this honor.

Ascension’s St. John Health System operates seven hospitals and more than 90 healthcare clinics and facilities in eastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas. St. John Health System employs approximately 8,000 associates. Across the region, St. John Health System provided more than $68 million in community benefit and care of persons living in poverty in fiscal year 2016.
