Broken Arrow Mayor Craig Thurmond recently received the Oklahoma Alliance for Arts Education’s (OAAE) annual Mayor’s Art Star Award at an Oklahoma Municipal League breakfast in downtown Tulsa.

Thurmond was recognized for his work with arts programs through the Broken Arrow City Council as well as his ongoing support to arts programs, artists and events in the city.

The City actively promotes local arts events, including the annual “Chalk It Up” pavement drawing competition on Main Street and the “Thursday Night Live” summer music series, hosted by the Broken Arrow Chamber of Commerce at the Rose District Pavilion.

A Creative Arts Center, with partial funding from the City, is presently being designed.

This year, with the leadership of Thurmond, the City launched one of its first public art programs downtown – utility box art. The Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) partnered with local artists to produce vinyl art wraps for utility boxes in the Rose District.

The City and the CVB also work together to promote the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center, which opened in 2009 and has attracted multiple national acts and celebrity performers to Broken Arrow. Each summer, Broadway star and B.A. native Kristin Chenoweth hosts the annual Broadway Bootcamp for high school students at the BA PAC.
