St. John Owasso Named One of Nation’s 100 Top Hospitals for Patient Satisfaction

St. John Owasso was recently named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals by IBM Watson Health. Formerly known as the Truven Health Analytics 100 Top Hospitals, this study spotlights the top-performing hospitals in the U.S. list based on a balanced scorecard of publicly available clinical, operational, and patient satisfaction metrics and data. This is the second year St. John Owasso has received this honor.

“This national award is an honor for our hospital and our community,” says St. John Owasso President and Chief Operating Officer David Phillips. “It is a testament to the outstanding work of our physicians, nurses, and staff and their dedication to providing safe, high-quality, exceptional care to our patients and the communities we serve.”

The Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals study uses independent and objective research to analyze hospital and health system performance in 11 areas, addressing inpatient mortality; 30-day mortality rates; complications; core measures; 30-day risk-adjusted readmission rates; severity-adjusted average length of stay; mean emergency room throughput; inpatient expense per discharge; Medicare spend per beneficiary; adjusted operating profit margin; and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) score (patient rating of overall hospital performance).

“The country’s best hospitals have proven that an unrelenting focus on quality, supported by constant measurement against peer performance benchmarks, can drive improved outcomes while reducing costs and growing profit margins,” says Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president, 100 Top Hospitals Programs, IBM Watson Health. “Congratulations to this 25th anniversary class of 100 Top Hospitals who have helped raise the bar for healthcare in the U.S. and improve the healthcare experiences of the people in their communities.”

To conduct the 100 Top Hospitals study, IBM Watson evaluated 2,785 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals that treat a broad spectrum of patients. They used public information, including the Medicare provider analysis and review data set, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Hospital Compare data set, and the Medicare cost report. St. John Owasso was measured against 851 other U.S. hospitals as part of the small community hospital category (25 to 99 beds). Hospitals do not apply for awards, and winners do not pay to market this honor.
