Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation Thanked for Transforming Tulsa’s Eugene Field Neighborhood

From Tulsa's Mayor By G.T. BYNUM
Mayor of Tulsa

Tulsa continues to dream big and pursue transformative opportunities that will help us be a globally competitive, world-class city. I’m pleased to tell you one of our dreams is transforming into reality.

Tulsa is one of five cities to receive the coveted Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant from the U.S. Office of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Funded through HUD’s Choice Neighborhoods Initiative, the City of Tulsa and the Tulsa Housing Authority (THA) will utilize the $30 million award to revitalize and transform the Eugene Field neighborhood and stimulate economic development in that area.

The City of Tulsa and THA came together with more than 30 community agencies to compete for the grant. We proved that when Tulsans work together we can achieve great things. I am thankful we can now include the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development among our growing coalition of partners to revitalize the Eugene Field neighborhood and am incredibly grateful they chose our city for this grant.

This great initiative is a marquee example of the way we are breaking down old silos and working together to move our city forward.

I want to thank the Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation for its $12 million affordable housing grant toward the Eugene Field revitalization project. I also appreciate the George Kaiser Family Foundation for providing a loan of up to $27 million, which will help replace the aging low-income apartment complexes, construct a community center and attract a grocery store to bring relief to one of our community food deserts.

The combination of grants from HUD and the Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation, along with the loan from the George Kaiser Family Foundation will help transform the Eugene Field community into one of the crown jewels of our community. This boost of funding is an important first step to help the renewal project in west Tulsa.

Thanks to these special funding resources, we have the ability to turn around a struggling neighborhood in a great renewal effort and feature the uniqueness of west Tulsa. This will be a giant step toward this area becoming an attractive destination once again.

I truly appreciate the opportunity we’ve been given through the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative that will allow us to transform the Eugene Field community into an amazing source of pride for our great city. We are committed to building better communities that will benefit generations to come.
