Jenks Students Win C-SPAN Awards



Seven students were recently recognized as winners in C-SPAN’s national 2018 StudentCam competition. C-SPAN annually invites middle and high school students to produce short documentaries about a subject of national importance. This year’s theme was, “The Constitution & You: Choose a provision of the U.S. Constitution and create a video illustrating why it’s important to you.”

The following students are second prize winners and will receive $1,500:
 • Matthew Murrie for his video, “Refugee of Spirit,” about religious freedom and the First Amendment. This documentary will air on C-SPAN throughout the day on April 7.
• Joshua Romer for his video, “First for a Reason,” about the First Amendment. This documentary will air on C-SPAN throughout the day on April 3.
• Jonathan Godfrey and Jackson Cropper for their video, “Pressed,” about freedom of the press. This documentary will air on C-SPAN throughout the day on April 15.
 
The following students have won third prizes and will receive $750:
 • Madeleine Dorst for her video, ”Church Perks: A Taxing Issue,” about church tax exemptions and the Establishment Clause.
• Bethany Holland for her video, “Patenting the Human Genome,” about the constitutionality of patenting human genes.  
 
The following students have won honorable mention prizes and will receive $250:
• Charlotte Suttee for her video, “All is Fair in Love and Hate,” about free speech.
• Simone Rosa and Jakob Olsen for their video, “Worth the Challenge,” about gun control.
