Congratulations to Junior Braden Milford whose project placed third out of 92 in the Environmental Engineering Category at the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).  The INTEL ISEF is the largest pre-college science competition in the world with over 1,800 finalists from 80 countries competing in 24 individual categories.

The 69th ISEF was held last week in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and included opportunities for finalists to meet with Nobel Prize scientists and other finalists from around the world.  The event included an eight-hour judging session when students presented their original research to category and special award judges; it also included an open house during which students presented their research to the public.

Milford’s project was “Developing a Novel Heavy Metal Bioremediation System Utilizing Immobilized Algae Partnered with Heavy Metal Resistant Microbial Isolates Collected from Contaminated Superfund Mine Sites and Identified with 16 s Ribosomal Subunit Analysis.”

The delegation from Oklahoma included nine students from across the state.  Competing for the third consecutive year was Cascia Hall senior Erika Ravitch with her research Analyzing National Health Records for Antibiotic Resistant Co-factors Utilizing Machine Learning.  Both Milford and Ravitch are coached by their teacher, Sally Fenska; they all appreciate the support of the Cascia Hall faculty/staff and sponsors of the state and regional science fairs.

In addition to his third place win, Milford received the U.S. Patent and Trademark Society Award and was encouraged to seek a patent for his novel system.  Milford also received two full ride college scholarships to Drexel University and The University of Arizona.
