Future Chefs Challenge

On March 8, 10 elementary school students from Tulsa Public Schools used their creativity and culinary skills to make healthy comfort food recipes in the 2017 “Sodexo Future Chefs Challenge,” held at Memorial Junior High School, 7502 E. 57th St.
The Sodexo Future Chefs Challenge was created seven years ago to get students thinking about making healthy food choices while also encouraging them to be active and creative in the kitchen. The 10 students who competed were selected out of a group of 126 elementary students who submitted healthy comfort food recipes.

Five Tulsa Public Schools students have been awarded 2017 Academic All-State Awards from the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence: Rachel Ijams, Yash Kumar, and Pierce Pettit from Booker T. Washington High School; Y Quan from Edison High School; and Edward McCabe from Memorial High School.

Dr. Gist to be Honored

AWC TULSA NEWSMAKER: The Tulsa Chapter of the Association for Women in Communications has named Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gist as one of its 2017 Newsmakers. AWC Tulsa’s Newsmakers Awards recognizes the advancements and contributions of Oklahoma women and female communicators. Gist will be honored at the Newsmakers Awards luncheon on May 3 at Southern Hills Country Club along with Michelle Hardesty, executive director of the Hardesty Family Foundation; Tina Pena, founder of Mita’s Foundation and associate professor of Spanish at Tulsa Community College; and writer, educator and television host Teresa Miller.

Author Visits Seventh Graders

In December, seventh grade students at three Tulsa Public Schools middle schools – Edison, Hale and McLain – received a surprise visit from Ji-Li Jiang, author of Red Scarf Girl, a memoir about Jiang’s childhood during the Cultural Revolution in China. During her visits, Jiang spoke to students about the historical background of China’s transformation and her personal experiences, and hosted a “Question and Answer” session.

Reading Initiative Announced

On Nov. 10, Mayor-elect G.T. Bynum joined Tulsa Public Schools and Reading Partners to host a Rally for Reading at Rudisill Regional Library to announce a city-wide effort to significantly increase the reading proficiency rate for Tulsa third graders.

Students Tour Miller Museum

As part of the Any Given Child Tulsa program, eighth grade students from Edison Preparatory School visited the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art in September.
Eighth graders from across the district will tour the museum through March 2017.

TPS Teacher of the Year Nominations Open

On Oct. 18, Tulsa Public Schools launched its nomination process for the 2017 Teacher of the Year.

Each spring, the district names a Teacher of the Year to represent Tulsa teachers both locally as an education advocate and spokesperson and statewide as a candidate for Oklahoma Teacher of the Year.

TPS Teachers Arrive From Spain

On July 26, Tulsa Public Schools teachers, school leaders and district staff gathered at Tulsa International Airport to welcome the first group of elementary teachers from Spain who will begin their tenures as Tulsa Public Schools teachers starting with the 2016-17 school year.
