TPS Graduates Receive All-State Scholarships

The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence recently recognized four Tulsa Public Schools graduates as 2016 academic all-staters: Mohamed Aly, Micah Cash, Nathan Levit and John Unterschuetz. These students were among 100 Oklahoma public school seniors to receive this recognition.

TPS Announces Partnership with Metro Tulsa Transit Authority

STUDENT TRANSPORTATION: Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gist speaks during the school district’s July announcement of its new partnership with Metro Tulsa Transit Authority (MTTA). The partnership will allow TPS students in grades 9-12 to ride Tulsa Transit for free on weekdays by showing their student ID. The program began Aug. 1. Standing with Gist are TPS students, and to the right of Gist are, from left, MTTA Assistant General Manager Debbie Ruggles, TPS Board President Dr. Lana Turner-Addison, and TPS Board member Gary Percefull. The program will also support district efforts to boost attendance by giving students a back-up option if they miss the school bus.

In the wake of recent acts of violence throughout the country, Unite T-Town was held July 12 at Booker T. Washington High School. The event was organized by Tulsa Public Schools Campus Police and North Tulsa community leaders, with the intent to bring together Tulsans from all walks of life.

Based on community nominations, the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) recently awarded Tulsa Public Schools a “One in a Melon” award for administering exemplary farm-to-school programs. Fifty top programs across the country were selected for the award.

Board Approves New Principals for Seven TPS Sites

In June, the Tulsa Public Schools Board of Education approved principal recommendations for seven school sites: Thoreau Demonstration Academy, Skelly Elementary, Central Junior High and High School, Clinton Middle School, Eugene Field Elementary, Hawthorne Elementary, Edison Preparatory School, and Marshall Elementary. The new administrators begin their positions on July 1.

On May 17, Webster High School graduates, from left, Martin Salazar, Malay Tiana Jackson, Jaymie Burleson, James Boone and Kory Whited (not pictured) received $2,500 HollyFrontier STEM Awards. A selection committee comprised of Webster science, technology, engineering and math teachers, alongside school counselors determined the recipients. These graduates will be attending college in pursuit of a STEM-related degree.

On Jan. 15, Tulsa Public Schools’ site Teacher of the Year winners met with previous Teacher of the Year recipients at East Central High School, 12150 E. 11th St. Past honorees worked with their 2016 counterparts to help them develop their portfolios that will later be used to determine the winner of the Oklahoma State Teacher of the Year.
