Seven Seniors Named Merit Finalists

Seven Union High School seniors have been named 2017-2018 National Merit Finalists:

• Grant Hizer, son of Lisa Guertin of Broken Arrow;
• Killian Kane, son of Kelly and Jennifer Kane of Tulsa;
• Alexander Labbane, son of Mondher and Cheryl Labbane of Broken Arrow;
• Ferdinand Mudjialim, son of Andy Mudjialim and Tan Fang Fang of Broken Arrow;
• Tony Nguyen, son of Henry and Tammy Nguyen of Tulsa;
• Hannah Rondthaler, daughter of Timothy Rondthaler and Joanne Call of Tulsa; and
• Josephine Uerling, daughter of Steve and Alicia Uerling of Broken Arrow. 

These seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring. In order to be named a finalist, students must meet several academic requirements. Additionally, students must:

• Be enrolled full time as a high school student, with plans to enter college no later than the fall following completion of high school;
• Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent U.S. resident (or an applicant for permanent residency) in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen; and
• Take the PSAT/NMSQT in the specified year of the high school program and no later than the third year in grades 9 through 12, regardless of grade classification or educational pattern.
