Accurate Night From the Field Yields Kansas 85-65 Win at Baylor

, Texas – Seven Jayhawks shot 50 percent or better from the field as No. 3 Kansas coasted to an 85-65 victory over Baylor during ESPN’s Big Monday contest in Waco in front of 10, 596 fans, a Ferrell Center record.

With the win, KU improved to 18-0 on the season, including 3-0 in Big 12 Conference games. Baylor fell to 12-5 overall and 2-2 in league play. The Jayhawks also spoiled the Bears’ 15 home game winning streak, another Ferrell Center record.

Junior Marcus Morris hit 10 of his 13 shots from the field (77 percent) to lead five Jayhawks in double-digits points with 25 and mark his sixth outing with 20-plus tallies. Twin Markieff Morris added 19 points on 9-of-10 shooting (90 percent).

For the game, Kansas hit 62.5 percent of its shots (35-for-56), which marked a season high.

Freshman Josh Selby (12), senior Tyrel Reed (11) and senior Mario Little (10) rounded out KU’s double-figure scorers

Kansas scored 28 of its 53 first half points from the paint to help KU shoot an incredible 79.3 percent (23-for-29) from the field during the first 20 minutes. It was the highest single half shooting percentage by the Jayhawks since the team hit 85 percent versus Missouri on Jan. 19, 1991. Kansas also benefitted from 10 Baylor turnovers, which they converted into 16 points.

At the 17:19 mark in the first half, Baylor’s Perry Jones hit two free throws to give the Bears their second lead of the game, 6-5.

In KU’s next trip down the court, Reed hit a three-pointer to jump-start a 7-0 run and give the Jayhawks back the advantage. Kansas would not trail again for the rest of the game.

A Tysawn Taylor jumper with 8:05 remaining extended KU’s lead to double-digits at 30-19. The Jayhawks used a 15-6 run over the next five minutes to gain a comfortable 47-27 advantage and posted a 53-32 lead at the break.

Baylor came out strong at the start of the second half to cut its deficit to 12 at 61-49 but Kansas quickly countered scoring 12 of the next 17 points in the game. From there, KU coasted to its 85-65 win.

For the game, the Jayhawks tallied 44 points from the paint and out-rebounded Baylor 27-19. Markieff Morris led KU with nine rebounds while Marcus followed with five.
