The American Heart Association recently held its Heart Walk kickoff to celebrate teams and individuals who are committed to walking and raising funds for heart research.
The Heart Walk will be at 8:30 a.m. April 2, starting at ONEOK Field and winding 3.2 miles through downtown Tulsa.
In its 27th year, the Heart Walk philosophy is twofold: to get the community moving and to encourage fundraising for heart-related issues.
More than 65 companies will be participating in this year’s walk. Last year, 5,000 walkers raised $659,000, and this year’s teams want to break that record.
The chair of the event is Don Walker, of Arvest Bank. Signature sponsors are Arvest and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma. Local sponsors are The Children’s Hospital at Saint Francis and Williams. Media sponsor is NewsChannel 8.
Nationally, Subway and Wal-Mart are sponsoring the event, which will have one million walkers across the country.
The Heart Walk program was developed as part of the American Heart Association’s answer to help companies change their culture from one of physical inactivity to a culture of physical activity.
“It also is very social because you can walk with your friends, family, children or just walk your dog,” said Heart Walk senior director Brandy Flewellen. “Simply walking 30 minutes a day provides heart health benefits.”
