Bighorns Snap 66ers Win Streak
, Nevada, February 28, 2010 – Despite nearly getting a triple-double from Larry Owens, the Tulsa 66ers five-game win streak was snapped by the Reno Bighorns Sunday, as the 66ers fell 113-101 at the Reno Events Center. Owens finished with 15 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.
DeVon Hardin started strong for the 66ers, scoring their first eight points of the game, but after a Doug Thomas lay up with 7:21 remaining in the first quarter, the Bighorns led 11-8. A lay up each from Rod Benson and Desmon Farmer sparked an 11-3 run by the Bighorns, giving them a 22-11 edge with 4:32 left. Benson finished with nine points and seven boards in the period, as the Bighorns shot 52 percent (13-25) from the field and took a 34-21 lead into the break. Hardin had 10 points in the quarter, as the 66ers made 8-of-19 field goals.
A 9-4 run to start the second quarter, capped by a Cezary Trebanski slam dunk, gave the Bighorns an 18-point lead at 43-25 with 8:31 remaining in the first half. Tulsa answered with a 12-5 run, as a Latavious Williams lay in cut the Reno advantage to 48-37 with 4:33 left in the half. Newcomer Richie Frahm hit three three-pointers in the remaining minutes of the quarter, as the Bighorns outscored the 66ers 19-9, taking a 67-46 lead into halftime. Frahm scored 10 points in the period, as the Bighorns made 9-of-17 field goals and 11-of-13 free throws. Mustafa Shakur scored eight second quarter points and Williams had 10 boards, as the 66ers shot 10-for-25 from the field.
Starting the third quarter, Shakur led a 17-6 charge by the 66ers, scoring nine straight points during the run that cut the Bighorns lead to 73-63 with 7:11 remaining in the third quarter. Reno outscored Tulsa 30-10 the remainder of the quarter, and led 103-73 at the break. Reno shot 13-of-23 from the field, as Will Blalock scored 11 points in the quarter. Shakur also scored 11 in the period, as Tulsa shot 61.1 percent (11-for-18) in the third.
Deron Washington scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, as the 66ers made 12-of-14 free throws down the stretch and outrebounded the Bighorns 18-7 in the period. Tulsa outscored Reno 28-10 in the final quarter.
The 66ers outrebounded the Bighorns 51-38 for the game, but Reno shot 11-for-18 (61.1 percent) from three-point range. Tulsa committed 21 turnovers to Reno’s 12, as the Bighorns never trailed in the contest.
The 66ers (19-15) finished with five players in double-figures scoring, led by Shakur with 23 points and six assists. Washington tallied 19 points, going 9-for-9 from the free throw line, while Hardin finished with 18 points and eight boards. Moses Ehambe added 11 points and Williams had nine points and a game-high 19 rebounds off the bench.
The Bighorns (17-19) finished with seven players in double digit scoring, led by Frahm with 23 points in his second game with Reno. Farmer finished with 21 points, while Benson had a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Doug Thomas added 16 points and seven boards, and DJ Strawberry had 14 points off the bench.
