Preston Freeman, a resident of Bixby, recently concluded his Boy Scout Eagle project at Horizon Animal Hospital in Bixby, where he made a final donation to help local rescue animals waiting for adoption.
The City of Bixby does not have its own animal shelter. Instead, when local animal control picks up a dog or cat, it is taken to the hospital while it waits to be adopted.
A nonprofit organization called Bixby Animal Rescue Network (BARN) supports these animals by providing safety, shelter, food, and veterinary care. Seeing an opportunity to help, Freeman built his Eagle Scout project around a donation drive to raise money, food, treats, cleaning supplies, toys, blankets and other items to give to the animals and help support BARN’s vision of enriching the lives of the rescued dogs and cats.
Freeman created a plan to canvas local Bixby neighborhoods with flyers and went door-to-door to pick up their donations. He also set up donation tables at a local Reasor’s and Petco to collect donations on-site. His goal for the project was to collect 200 items. Local residents responded to the project with an overwhelming response, and Preston was able to collect more than 500 items and over $300 in cash to donate toward the aid of the rescue animals.
Preston delivered his large donation at Horizon Animal Hospital located at 15606 S. Memorial Dr. in Bixby. Representatives from Horizon Animal Hospital and Bixby Animal Rescue Network were present to accept the donation.
Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts or qualified Venturers in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) may undertake an Eagle Scout service project (or simply, Eagle Project) to demonstrate leadership of others while performing a project for the benefit of his community. Boy Scouts must complete an Eagle Project to attain the Eagle Scout rank.
