The annual Bixby Christmas Parade will welcome in the holidays Dec. 11. The Rotary Club of Bixby has sponsored and coordinated the Bixby Christmas Parade since 2000 and members are looking forward to the upcoming event.

Founded in 2000, the Rotary Club of Bixby has become involved in a number of projects in the community. With the motto “service above self” members are eager to reach out to others through the projects.

President of the Rotary Club of Bixby, Buster McCurtain, explains that members enjoy helping not only those in the local community but also individuals from around the world. “Some of our local projects include helping the Bixby Community Outreach Center, providing scholarships for seniors of Bixby High School and ringing bells with the Salvation Army during the holidays.”

The Bixby Christmas Parade provides a great opportunity for the Rotary Club of Bixby to help spread Christmas cheer and to promote the Bixby community. The parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. from Bixby High School. The parade will then travel through the downtown area.

The event will bring the community together for a fun holiday celebration. “The Rotary Club of Bixby wants to make sure that families have the opportunity to enter into the community spirit,” adds McCurtain.

A variety of floats are being prepared for the event and each year there are surprises in every turn of the parade. “There are around 30 floats in the parade, which churches, businesses, organizations and individuals build and enter. The theme of the parade this year is Joy to the World. We will be giving away a trophy to the float that best depicts the theme,” says McCurtain.

Awards will also be given to the best themed float, the best decorated float and the best decorated vehicle.

A variety of participants enjoy participating in the parade with one another every year explains McCurtain. “This year, the grand marshal will be Mayor Ray Bowen. The Bixby Fire Department will also be present and will carry Santa on the fire engine in the parade.

Christmas Rotary Elves will walk along with the parade and hand out candy to children. “The Shriners will also be there and will bring all of their little cars. There is a round-a-bout in downtown Bixby and they like to race around that, which the kids really seem to like,” says McCurtain.

The event has a positive impact on the businesses in the Bixby area. Spectators are given the opportunity to enjoy the parade in downtown Bixby and then finish their holiday shopping in the unique stores.
