Bixby’s Charley Young Event Park Receives Award

LANDMARK: The Charley Young Park Flagpole is a landmark in Bixby. The Flagpole was relocated to the park as part of Tulsa County’s Vision 2025 and included landscaping and electrical work.
The American Planning Association – Oklahoma Chapter ( Oklahoma) recently announced the winners of its 2018 Planning Awards Program. The awards honor outstanding plans, best practices and innovative concepts throughout Oklahoma. The five award winners were recognized at the 2018 Annual State Planning Conference.
Charley Young Event Park, also known as , received the 2018 Great Public Space Award. in the heart of Downtown Bixby has roots dating back to the 1920’s. The redesign of the historic park included the addition of pedestrian and bike facilities, street-scaping on the park’s perimeters, wayfinding signage and increased landscaping. The iconic Charley Young Event Park flagpole was preserved as a park centerpiece. The flagpole was originally located at Armstrong Street and Dawes Ave. It was erected during World War I in the center of Downtown Bixby and removed in 1980 until it was placed in Charley Young Event Park in 1986.
Charley Young Event Park, designed by Planning Design Group and constructed by Atlas General Contractors, opened in May 2017 with funding through Vision 2025 allocations. Since its unveiling, it has hosted a variety of free public events and community gatherings including the Bixby Farmer’s Market, Back to School Bash, concerts, Movies in the Park, Friday Food Fest and many more.
