Borman Smashes Discus Record in North Texas

DENTON, Texas — Just six throwers from the Oklahoma program attended Saturday’s North Texas Spring Classic, but the group combined for big results as Brittany Borman smashed a nine-year old program record in the discus, four athletes recorded PRs in the discus and Borman was one of two Sooners to claim event titles as freshman Justin Shirk did so in the javelin.

Borman was actually one of two Sooners to eclipse the previous program record of 180-6 (55.03) set by Bambi Carson in 2008 as Karen Shump finished second in the event. Borman’s throw of 186-1 (56.72) eclipsed her previous best as a Sooner by over 25 feet. Shump was second with a toss of 182-9 (55.70), extending her PR by over 21 feet. The throws are the top two performances in the nation this season as the top mark entering the weekend was 177-2 (54.00).

Shirk claimed his second javelin title of his early collegiate career as he won the event by over 14 feet with a throw of 221-3 (67.44). The throw is the second longest in school history behind Cale Drumright’s 228-6 (68.64) in 2006.

The men’s discus saw Luke Bryant extend his PR by over two feet as he finished fourth overall and first among collegiate competitors with a throw of 194-10 (59.39). Bryant’s mark is the second longest in program history and is the third best in the nation.

Bryant was one of two OU athletes with a PR in the event as K.P. Singh finished sixth overall and second among collegiate athletes with a throw of 185-8 (56.60), the sixth longest in OU history. Colin Quirke finished seventh in the event with a season-best mark of 183-7 (55.96).

Oklahoma returns to action next week when it hosts its first home meet of the outdoor season. The John Jacobs Collegiate Invitational is slated to begin Friday at the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex with the javelin and weight throw starting at 2 p.m. All other events will be held on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. Admission to the meet is free.
