Broadway Show “Wicked” Flies into Tulsa

The Broadway show Wicked will be flying into Tulsa this summer. Witches will be casting a spell over the Performing Arts Center from July 15 to Aug. 9. Wicked will bring a wonderful performance to the area.

The show has captivated audiences all over the world with its storyline. In the Land of Oz, before Dorothy and Toto ever arrived, two individuals became friends. One of the girls had a green hue to her skin and was very misunderstood. The other girl was beautiful and well loved. Through the odyssey they turned into the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch.

The story is based on the novel “Wicked” by author Gregory Maguire. The novel was published in 1995 and sold almost 4 million copies. “Wicked” still remains on the bestseller lists 14 years after it was first published.

This will be the second national tour of Wicked. There are currently eight worldwide productions of the show including two North American tours, a Broadway, San Francisco, Australian, London, Japanese and a German production. There will also be a Dutch language production opening in 2011.

Joe Montello, a two time Tony Award winner, directed the musical. Musical staging was created by Wayne Cilento, also a Tony Award winner. Wicked is produced by Marc Platt, John B. Platt, Universal Pictures, The Araca Group and David Stone.

The Tony Award winner Eugene Lee created the set design of Wicked. Costume Design that will be featured in Wicked is by Susan Hilferty, also a Tony Award winner. Keneth Posner created the lighting design and the sound design is by Tony Meola. The musical director of Wicked is Stephen Oremus. James Lynn Abbott created the choreography of the show while orchestrations are by William David Brohn.

Broadway’s Wicked has broken box office records in every stop along the tour. There have been more than 17 million audience members of the show throughout the world. Washington Post has called Wicked “a breathtaking success story of a magnitude that North America has not witnessed since the peak years of The Phantom of the Opera.”

Wicked has been presented with 20 major awards including a Grammy Award. The show has also received three Tony Awards and six Drama Desk awards including Best Musical.

Wicked will be presented in conjunction with Celebrity Attraction’s 2008-2009 Broadway Season. The Broadway show will leave Tulsa wishing for more and maybe even a little bit wicked!
