Cardinals Grow in 2010 Draft
The Major League Baseball 2010 First-Year Player Draft was completed this afternoon. The St. Louis Cardinals selected 52 players in the 50-round draft. Among the Cardinals’ selections were 26 pitchers, 12 infielders, 11 outfielders, and three catchers. The Redbirds chose 41 collegiate players and 11 high school prospects.
Included among the draft selections today is Drew Benes (35th round), son of former Cardinals pitcher Andy Benes and nephew of current Cardinals scout and former pitcher Alan Benes. The Cardinals also drafted Joseph Bergman (33rd round), an infielder who the Cardinals selected in last year’s draft (22nd round), but did not sign. Bergman had surgery on his right hand in August of 2009 and was sidelined for six months
