Cardinals Purchase Aaron Miles

The St. Louis Cardinals purchased the contract of switch-hitting infielder Aaron Miles from Springfield (AA) prior to tonight’s game against the Cincinnati Reds and optioned outfielder Allen Craig to Memphis (). Miles will wear his familiar uniform #12.

Miles, 33, signed a minor league free-agent contract with the Cardinals on April 30 and appeared in 16 games with the Springfield Cardinals, batting .275 with 13 after a brief stint with the Cardinals’ Extended Spring Training team.

“Aaron is a winning player who understands that his role is to help the ballclub however necessary,” said Cardinals’ Vice President/General Manager John Mozeliak. “His versatility both in the field and as a switch-hitter will add to the depth on our bench.”

Miles, a member of the Cardinals’ World Championship team in 2006, was one of the final players cut this spring by the Reds. Miles compiled a .289 average in his three seasons (402 games) with the Cardinals, including a career-best .317 mark in 2008. The switch-hitting infielder owns a career batting mark of .282 with 16 home runs and 175 in parts of seven seasons with the White Sox, Rockies, Cardinals and Cubs.
