Cardinals Sign 33 Draft Picks


ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today they have signed 33 players from the 2010 June First-Year player draft. All those signed will be reporting to either Florida to play in the Gulf Coast League, Batavia (low-A) or Johnson City ®.

Highlighting the list is 3rd round selection, Sam Tuivailala from Aragon High School (Calif.). The shortstop was the Peninsula Athletic League Player of the Year, leading his team to a 26-6 record with his .429 average. In pitching duties this year for his high school team he was 3-0 with two saves and an 0.84 .

“We have successfully filled out our rosters for all three short season teams with players from the 2010 draft,” said Jeff Luhnow, Vice President of Scouting and Player Development. “Competition begins next Friday as Batavia opens up their season, with the Cardinals and Johnson City following on the 21st and 22nd of June, respectively. All of us are excited to see the new Cardinals players in action.”

Cody Stanley (4th round), Nicholas Longmire (5th round) and Greg Garcia (7th round) have also signed with St. Louis. Stanley is a catcher from North Carolina-Wilmington who led the conference with 22 runners caught stealing and was named a First-Team All Colonial player. Longmire was an All-Conference outfielder for the University of the Pacific and was the top hitter in the Big West conference. Garcia, a shortstop from the University of Hawaii, led his team with a .358 average and earned First Team All- honors in 2010. Andrew Benes, son of former Cardinals pitcher Andy Benes, inked with the club as well.

The team also announced that they have signed Ricky Martinez, an undrafted right-handed pitcher out of Nova Southeastern. Martinez is the son of Dennis Martinez, current pitching coach for the Springfield Cardinals.
