Cas Ring Headed for Space Station

THE FINAL FRONTIER – Eugene native Col. James Dutton Jr. and the crew of Space Shuttle Discovery launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida this morning bound for the international space station, carrying spare parts, science experiments and Len Casanova’s 1958 Rose Bowl ring.

Dutton, a Sheldon High School graduate and UO football fan, brought the ring with him to honor his late grandfather, Charlie Harvey, who was a big fan of Cas and the Ducks. Also stowing away on the trip 250 miles above earth is a small Oregon flag signed by UO head coaches.

Upon its return from orbit, the Rose Bowl ring will be incorporated into the Len Casanova display at the athletic department headquarters named for the late football coach and athletic director.
