Championship Steak Cook-Off Set

OUTDOOR CHEFS: Oklahoma Championship Steak Cook-Off leaders Mark Shackelford and Tripp Haggard with Karl Engel of the Pigcasso BBQ cooking team of Fellers Certified in Tulsa. The Pigcasso team, which competes in BBQ and steak cooking competitions throughout the region, was the first team to enter the Oklahoma cook-off, which will be held September 26th in downtown Tulsa.
The first annual Oklahoma Championship Steak Cook-Off will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, in downtown Tulsa. The benefit event is being created by the Brotherhood of St. Lawrence, a men’s fellowship group at Trinity Episcopal Church. The Oklahoma cook-off will be similar in concept to events held each year in Magnolia, Ark. (the “World Championship Steak Cook-Off”) and in Hico, Texas (the “Texas State Championship Steak Cook-Off). Each has been featured on The Food Network.
“We are excited to be creating this special event for Tulsa and Oklahoma,” said Tripp Haggard, event chair.
Haggard said event planners are hoping to draw 50 teams for the Oklahoma championship. Teams will be competing for $5,000 in cash awards. Steaks will be evaluated by a panel of six judges based on taste, tenderness, degree of doneness (medium), and appearance. Cooking teams will be provided the 16-ounce rib eye for the cooking competition and can add seasonings and any “secret ingredients.”
The Oklahoma Championship Steak Cook-Off will be held on the blocked-off streets surrounding Trinity Episcopal Church at 6th and Cincinnati in downtown Tulsa. Other features will be live music and sponsor booths. “One cannot imagine the smell in the air when 50 grills of all shapes and sizes converge to cook over one thousand steaks,” the chair noted. “This event will definitely be a treat for steak lovers.”
“After teams cook their steaks for the judging, they will then cook up to 25 steaks each to be served to the 1,250 people buying tickets for the event,” Haggard explained. Tickets, priced at $20 each, are available for purchase on the web site
