Students must be graduating from a public or private high school with a 2.0 grade point average or better. Home schooled students also qualify.
“Tulsa Achieves is an incredibly innovative way to provide a college education to our local students. We have made college accessible to thousands of Tulsans who might not otherwise who have been able to attend. College should be for those who can achieve, not just those who can afford the cost of degree. ,” said Tom McKeon, president of Tulsa Community College.
created Tulsa Achieves in 2007 to help eliminate the financial burden of attending college by providing additional funding to fill the gap between financial aid and the cost of attending college. The program continues to meet its goals of encouraging high school completion, increasing access to college for more students, and increasing the number of college graduates in Oklahoma. It has been praised by the Oklahoma Governor and local government officials and has made higher education a reality for the more than 5,000 students who have applied in the last four years.
Tulsa Achieves students begin their coursework the fall semester after high school graduation and may continue in the program for 63 credit hours of three years, whichever comes first.
In addition to their course work, Tulsa Achieves students are asked to give 40 hours of volunteer service to their community each academic year. More than 84,000 volunteer hours have been contributed by Tulsa Achieves students since the program launched.
