Con-way Freight Driver Achieves One Million Accident-Free Miles

(SAPULPA) – Every industry has certain unique career milestones which set apart an individual as especially skilled and accomplished in their profession. For a professional truck driver, one million miles of safe driving without an accident is the ultimate measure of excellence. It is an elite club that now counts Sapulpa, Okla., resident Phillip Powell as a member.
Powell is a driver sales representative for Con-way Freight, a less-than-truckload () freight carrier and the largest subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (: ). He safely drove the one million miles between 1999 and 2009, and reached the one-million-mile mark on April 25. Powell was the first driver hired by Con-way Freight when the company began operations in Tulsa, Okla., in 1989.

Powell has been a professional truck driver for 28 years, beginning his driving career while serving in the U.S. Army from 1981 to 1988. His route takes him from Sapulpa to Kansas City, Kan., a round trip of approximately 514 miles. Powell has been married for 25 years to his wife, Eleanor, and has three children: Tricia, 19; Phillip, 11; and Colby, 7. He is a member of the New Springs Church in Jenks, Okla., and enjoys fishing in his spare time.
Over the company’s 25-year history, more than 1,500 Con-way Freight driver sales representatives have reached the one-million-mile safe driving milestone, while more than 90 have driven two million miles accident-free.
