Congratulations to OSU Icons; TU Tennis Goes Dancing
DUNKING FOR CHARITY: Blake Griffin dedicated All-Star weekend, when he won the NBA’s slam dunk contest by jumping over the 2011 KIA Optima in the photo, to his late friend Wilson Holloway. He later dedicated the car to a public auction. It is my honor to have won the auction, where my donation will go to Stand Up To Cancer, a fundraising organization benefiting cancer research. Blake and Wilson were high school friends and teammates at Oklahoma Christian School, and Wilson later went on to play football for TU.
Jane and I are looking forward to the Oklahoma State University in Tulsa event “A Stately Affair” this month where the 2011 Icons will be honored. They are Ebb Reeves, D.O., Robert McCullough II, D.O., Tulsa business executive Michael P. Johnson and the H.A. and Mary K. Chapman Charitable Trust.
Howard Barnett, president of -Tulsa and Center for Health Sciences, says the awards honor individuals or entities that have made significant contributions to Tulsa and Oklahoma.
Dr. Reeves is a retired family practitioner and former chief of staff at the Medical Center in Tulsa. He helped organize the Medical Center Trust and supported the 2009 legislation that allocates $5 million a year to support the hospital’s operations. He now serves as trustee of the Medical Center.
Dr. McCul-lough is an internist/hospitalist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Tulsa. He is a former professor at the College of Osteopathic Medicine and trustee of the Medical Center. In addition, he has served in different capacities for the American Osteopathic Association, the American Osteopathic Foundation and the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association.
An active community leader, Michael Johnson is the president and chief executive officer of the J&A Group. He retired as senior vice president and chief administrative officer of Tulsa-based Williams Companies in 2008. He currently serves as board member of the Oklahoma Conference for Community and Justice, the Tulsa Community Foundation and the Oklahoma Affiliate of the Health Care Service Corporation. He also previously served on the -Tulsa Board of Trustees in several leadership roles. In addition to his many accolades, Michael is my friend and also a partner in the Tulsa Talons.
The H.A. and Mary K. Chapman Charitable Trust is an organization originated by Tulsans H.A. Chapman, an independent oil and gas producer, and Mary Chapman, a nurse. The Chapman Trust provides support for nonprofit organizations involved in a wide variety of charitable purposes.
“A Stately Affair in Tulsa” is a black tie event at Southern Hills Country Club. Proceeds will fund scholarships for students who plan to attend the Center for Health Sciences or -Tulsa. This is the first joint fundraising effort for ’s two Tulsa campuses.
alumnus T. Boone Pickens is the honorary chair for A Stately Affair and Mary Shaw is the event chair. President Burns Hargis will serve as the emcee for the evening. It is my honor to serve on the Board of Trustees of -Tulsa. The entire system has great leadership, which is a great plus for our state.
TU TENNIS
Congratulations to University of Tulsa head tennis coach Vince Westbrook and his team, which finished undefeated in Conference and reached Round 16 of the Tournament in Stanford, Calif. Coach Westbrook has created an amazing program, one of the best in the nation with top-notch facilities.
TULSA TALONS
The season is moving along and the young Talons keep improving. Plan to attend the upcoming home games June 11 with Utah and June 25 with Dallas. The Talons post game parties are at the Full Moon Cafe on Cherry Street. Come on by and mingle with Talons players and cheerleaders after each home game!
MILITARY MUSEUM
Thank you to The Kiwanis Club of East Tulsa County, which recently awarded a $1,000 matching grant to the Museum of Military History. The local museum is a collection of over 1,800 military artifacts that have been collected by Colonel Robert W. Powell. While some of the artifacts have been purchased, many of them have been donated from the personal belongings of veterans. The collection includes everything from uniforms to hand-written notes and letters. The mission of the museum is to provide education about the history of the United States military, especially for younger generations. It is my honor as a veteran to help support the museum.
