Cooper Defends 800 Title at John McDonnell Invitational


FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Scott Cooper won his second consecutive John McDonnell Invitational 800-meter run Saturday afternoon to highlilght OU action in Fayetteville. Cooper won the event with a time of 1:49.86, less than a second off his PR of 1:48.87. Running in just the second 800-meter run by a Sooner this year, Cooper moved into fourth among Big 12 competitors this season in the event. Cooper won the event in 2009 with a time of 1:48.91.

Cooper was one of two OU athletes in the top three as Chris Sweeney clocked a time of 1:50.96 to place third and move into seventh in the Big 12. Eric Harasyn was seventh Saturday with a time of 1:52.90.

The men’s 1,500-meter run saw Rob Sorrell and Jacob Boone move into second and third, respectively, on the Big 12 list as Sorrell finished fifth overall and third among collegiate competitors with a time of 3:46.77. Boone was just behind Sorrell in sixth with a time of 3:46.84.

Oklahoma returns to action next week when it hosts its first home meet of the outdoor season. The John Jacobs Collegiate Invitational is slated to begin Friday at the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex with the javelin and weight throw starting at 2 p.m. All other events will be held on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. Admission to the meet is free.
