Cowboys Beat Penn State at Blue Gray Classic
The No. 54 Oklahoma State men’s tennis team defeated its third-straight ranked opponent Thursday, knocking off No. 44 Penn State, 4-1, in the first round of the Blue Gray Tennis Classic at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center.
The Cowboys, who also upset No. 41 Hawai’i and No. 56 in their two previous matches, are now 6-4 in 2010.
Oklahoma State started the day by picking up the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 spot from Oleksandr Nedovyesov and Aleksey Bessonov and the No. 3 spot from Eric West and Anton Bobytskyi.
Nedovyesov, 19th in the singles rankings, carried OSU’s momentum into singles play, quickly taking care of Penn State’s Eddie Bourchier in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. The Cowboys senior is now 8-2 at the No. 1 spot this year.
With Oklahoma State up 2-0, Penn State’s Guillaume St-Maurice picked up Penn State’s only team point with a win at No. 6 singles.
The Cowboys then finished the dual strongly with wins from Aleksey Bessonov and Ilija Martinoski at No. 4 and 3 singles, respectively.
