Cowboys Lose To Nebraska
STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State dropped the middle game of its series against Nebraska as the Cornhuskers earned a 9-2 win Saturday afternoon at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The Cowboys stranded 12 runners on the basepaths as they fell to 16-8 overall and 1-4 in Big 12 Conference play. The two teams will square off in Sunday’s series finale with both looking for their first league series win of the season.
Tyler Lyons suffered his first loss of the season on the mound and fell to 2-1 after the senior southpaw allowed seven runs on 10 hits in 6.1 innings of work.
took an early lead in its first at bat. Davis Duren led off and was hit by a pitch, then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a foul out, Tom Belza brought Duren home with a sacrifice fly to make the score 1-0.
The Cowboys were poised to add to their first-inning lead after an infield single and two walks loaded the bases with two outs, but NU starter Khris Tate escaped further damage when he induced a force out at second to end the inning.
The Huskers got to Lyons in the second, tying the game on an single by Chad Christensen, and then took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the third as Tyler Farst and Cody Asche each recorded s to make the score 3-1.
NU (15-12, 3-5) added another run in the fourth and then broke the game open in the seventh as they bashed two home runs en route to a five-run rally. The first blast was a solo shot off the bat of DJ Belfonte, and three batters later, Asche delivered a grand slam off reliever Matt Klein to put the visitors up 9-1.
The Cowboys’ final run came in the seventh on a solo homer by Belza, his second round tripper of the season.
