Cowboys Move On at NCAAs
ATHENS, Ga. – Oklahoma State’s Oleksandr Nedovyesov, ranked the No. 5 singles player in the country, advanced to the round of 16 in the singles and doubles brackets of the Individual Tennis Championships Thursday, handling Ohio State’s Justin Kronauge, 6-4, 6-2, in singles play and teaming with Aleksey Bessonov to defeat Mississippi State’s George Coupland and Artem Ilyushin, 6-7, 7-5, 6-2, at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Nedovyesov, who knocked off South Carolina’s Diego Cubas, 6-2, 6-1, in the opening round Wednesday, is now 7-3 in the his career at the Singles Championships, finishing 1-1 in 2006, and 2-1 in both 2007 and 2008.
With the straight-set singles win over the 23rd-ranked Buckeye, Nedovyesov’s spring singles record improves to 19-3.
In the doubles bracket, Nedovyesov and partner Bessonov gave up the first set 7-6, but came back to claim the second set 7-5 and finished the third set strongly with a 6-2 win to move on to the next round.
Both Cowboys continue their play at the 2010 Individual Championships Friday, with Nedovyesov facing USC’s Robert Farah in the singles bracket while he and Bessonov will face the winner of this evening’s match between William and Mary’s Keziel Juneau and Sebastien Vidal and Tennessee’s Davey Sandgren and John-Patrick Smith in the doubles bracket.
