Cowboys Take Team Title In Hawaii
WAIKOLOA, Hawaii — Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team earned its third victory of the year and its first of the spring season on Friday, taking top honors at the Ameri Ari Invitational at the Waikoloa Kings’ Course.
In five events this year, the second-ranked Cowboys now have three victories as well as a runner-up finish to their credit.
Playing in their first tournament of the spring, the Cowboys entered the final round with a seven-shot advantage over at the par-72, 7,074-yard layout. used a 9-under 279 during its final round to finish five shots clear of Texas. The Cowboys posted a 54-hole total of 830, 34-under, while the Longhorns came in at 835 and the Bruins finished alone in third at 836.
Oregon’s Daniel Miernicki defeated UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay on the seventh playoff hole to take the individual title. The two players were joined by Texas’ Bobby Hudson at 203 atop the individual leaderboard.
A trio of players finished in the top 10 individually withsenior Kevin Tway leading the way. The Edmond, Okla., native posted an even-par 72 during his closing round to finish in sole possession of fifth place at 11-under 205. Tway, who did not record a bogey through his first two rounds, opened his final round with a birdie-eagle start and reeled off nine-straight pars before making his first bogey of the event at the par-4 12th. After three-straight bogeys on Nos. 15-17, he carded a birdie at the par-5 finishing hole to get back to even for the day.
For the second day in a row, junior Morgan Hoffmann made a bigjump up the leaderboard, moving from a tie for 23rd into a tie for sixth place at 206 after firing a 7-under 65 during his third round. The Wyckoff, N.J., native began play on the second hole and birdied two of his first four holes before logging another birdie at the eighth. Hoffmann added birdies at Nos. 12 and 13 before closing with back-to-back birdies at the 18th and first holes.
Sophomore Drew Page earned his first career top 10, tying for 10th place at 7-under 209. After opening with rounds of 69 and 68, Page closed with a 72 on Friday.
True freshman Talor Gooch posted his low round of the event, a2-under 70, to finish tied for 28th place at 3-under 213, while redshirt freshman Kevin Dougherty’s third-round 74 tied him for 72nd place at 221.
