Cowgirl Netters Come Up Short Against Kansas State
The Oklahoma State women’s tennis narrowly missed its second conference win of the weekend Sunday as the Cowgirls came just short in their upset bid of No. 41 Kansas State, 4-3.
The match came down to the wire as OSU’s Sarah Meghoufel and KSU’s Petra Chuda went to a third set at No. 6 singles with the dual score tied at 3-3, but Chuda came out on top, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, to earn the win for the Wildcats.
“We just let one get away,” coach Chris Young said. “We had all of our chances. Sarah played such a good first set and we had the person that we wanted on the court, but their girl just stepped up and went for her shots and attacked and we backed away.
“That’s been the story of our season is that we have to get the girls to have the confidence to step up when the match is on the line and go for their shots. Malika (Rose) did a good job of that Friday night (against Kansas) but we couldn’t repeat that.”
The Cowgirls did get off to a quick start as they took two of three doubles matches to earn the first team point. Rose and Kanyapat Narattana won 8-5 at No. 1 while C.C. Sardinha and Meghoufel won 8-4 at No. 2.
Singles play was close throughout, as Sasha Belova and Narattana picked up straight-set wins for the Cowgirls at Nos. 2 and 5 while the Wildcats won at Nos. 1, 3 and 4 to set up the finale on court No. 6.
Oklahoma State moves to 7-14 (3-7) on the year while the Wildcats improve to 14-6 (5-5).
The Cowgirls return to action next weekend as they take on Oklahoma in the Bedlam match April 23 in Stillwater.
