Cowgirl’s Softball Ranked in Latest Polls


STILLWATER, Okla. ( Athletics) — For the first time since 2004, the Oklahoma State softball team has broken into the top 25 rankings. The Cowgirls are No. 24 in the .com/USA Softball poll and No. 25 in the Today/NFCA Division I poll. is 10-5 on the season and the five losses have all been to ranked opponents.

Oklahoma State is coming off a 4-1 weekend at the Cathedral City Classic where they defeated No. 13 California. Their only loss of the tournament came to the defending national champions and top-ranked Washington Huskies. OSU’s other four losses were to fourth-ranked Michigan twice and No. 19 twice.

Junior Mariah Gearhart is leading the Cowgirls offensively with a .447 batting average, 21 hits and nine stolen bases. Sophomore Julie Ward adds 22 runs batted in, seven doubles and five home runs.

The pitching staff has a combined 2.76 earned run average. Senior Anna Whiddon is 7-2 with four complete games, two shutouts and 43 strikeouts in 46.1 innings pitched.

The Cowgirls will play their home opener on Wednesday, March 3, at 3 p.m. against North Texas (5-6) at Cowgirl Stadium. Admission is free.
