Cowgirl Softball Wins Two in California
CATHEDRAL CITYCalif. (OSU Athletics <http://www.okstate.com>) —The Oklahoma State softball team started the weekend with two wins, beating Hawaii 4-0 and BYU 3-1. Senior Anna Whiddon threw a one-hitter shutout againstHawaii and junior Mariah Gearhart went 3-for-5 between both games with three runs batted in.
In the first game of the day against Hawaii (8-4), Whiddon threw her one-hitter shutout and didn’t allow the hit until the sixth inning. It was only the second time this season the Rainbow Wahine had been held to just one hit.
The Cowgirls (8-4) scored the first two runs in the fifth inning when Amy Graham hit a single to centerfield and Chelsea Garcia joined her on base with a fielder’s choice. Gearhart then stepped up with a double to centerfield and scored them both. OSU scored two more runs in the seventh when the bases were loaded and Gearhart hit a blooper past the shortstop and scored Graham from third. Then Garcia scored on an error by the Hawaii catcher.
Whiddon threw all seven innings giving up one hit, striking out six and walking three and she improves to 4-2. Hawaii’s pitcher, Kaia Parnaby, picked up her first loss of the season and threw all seven innings, giving up two earned runs off six hits, striking out 10 and walking none.
Freshman Kat Espinosa threw her first complete game as a Cowgirl against BYU (9-2) in the second game of the day. She finished with one earned run off five hits, struck out five and walked none. She improves to 3-1.
OklahomaState’s three runs were scored from Cougar errors. In the first inning, Gearhart scored from third on a throwing error by the third baseman. In the fifth inning, Kelsey Anchors scored from second on a fielding error by the shortstop. Then Gearhart was able to score again from third on a fielding error by the left fielder. Cougar pitcher Paige Affleck allowed just three hits, struck out four and walked two and fell to 5-2.
