Cowgirls Fall to Aggies
STILLWATER, Okla. – The No. 59 Oklahoma State women’s tennis team moved to 8-7 overall and 2-4 in Big 12 play Sunday, falling to No. 41 Texas A&M, 6-1, at the DeBois Tennis Complex.
“It’s the same thing we’ve been fighting all year,” coach Chris Young said. “We’re just getting in a lot of tight matches and there’s just little things that are making the difference. A&M is a good, quality team and when the pressure moments came they stepped up. We’ve just got to get back to work. I know our girls will work hard this week and be ready for our next match.”
The match began with doubles play, where the Cowgirls lost at the No. 3 and 1 lines to give the Aggies the first team point, but Sasha Belova and Malika Rose did earn a win at No. 2 doubles, knocking off Texas A&M’s Stephanie Davidson and Morgan Frank in a tiebreaker, 8-7(3).
Singles play began with the an loss at the No. 3 spot to put the Aggies up, 2-0, but Sarah Meghoufel answered with a quick win in straight sets over Texas A&M’s Sheri Olivier at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-1, to bring the Cowgirls within one.
Texas A&M rallied, however, to win at No. 2, 5, 6 and 1 singles to earn a win over the Cowgirls, 6-1.
senior Nataliya Shatkovskaya, playing at No. 1 singles for the first time in Big 12 competition this year, took Texas A&M’s No. 58-ranked Elze Potgieter to a third-set tiebreaker, but fell just short in her upset bid, 4-6, 7-6(5), 1-0(10-4).
Oklahoma State returns to action April 14, taking on Bedlam-rival Oklahoma in Norman, Okla., at 3 p.m.
