Cowgirls Pick Up Two Wins


STILLWATER, Okla. — The No. 20 Oklahoma State softball team defeated Wisconsin 9-1 and Prairie View A&M 10-0 in the first day of the Mizuno Classic on Friday evening. Oklahoma State improves to 17-6 on the season.

Freshman Kat Espinosa threw a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts against Wisconsin and junior Taylor Marcum threw a three-hitter shutout with 10 strikeouts against PVAMU. Junior Alysia Hamilton went 4-for-7 on the day with five runs batted in.

In the first game of the night for the Cowgirls, Katelyn Bright got the first hit and advanced to third on a double by Hamilton. Both runners scored on a hard hit ball to right field by Tamara Brown. tacked on another run in the fourth when Hamilton hit another double to score Mariah Gearhart from third.

The Cowgirls scored another six runs off seven hits in the sixth inning, including a two -double by Megan Castle and a two -single by Hamilton.

The lone run for the Badgers was from a solo home run by Karia Powell in the fifth inning. Espinosa gave up two hits for one run, walked one and struck out 10 as she improved to 5-2 on the season.

In the second game of the night, Marcum threw her first start and her first complete game shutout of the season and improved to 1-0.

scored two runs in the first inning against Prairie View A&M, the first one was due to an illegal pitch. The second was from an -single by Ashley Boyd. Oklahoma State added another six runs in the second inning when Megan Castle hit a double to right field and was joined on base when Breana Casaus walked. They were followed up by a single from Bright, a double from Hamilton and a double from Ward that would all score four runs.

Another run was added to the board when Boyd hit another -single and Chelsea Garcia hit an -double. The Cowgirls final two runs came from -singles by Heinlein and freshman Katie Asher.

The Cowgirls will resume play on Friday as they host day two of the Mizuno Classic in Stillwater. will face Rutgers at 1:30 p.m. and an undetermined opponent at either 4:30 or 7 p.m.
