Cowgirls Roll in Season Opener

The Oklahoma State equestrian team defeated the UT Martin Skyhawks, 13-6, at Animal Science Arena on Saturday.

“I’m very pleased with the way we rode today,” head coach Larry Sanchez said. “I’m especially please with the way the horses rode and that’s a testament to how the girls have been riding the last few weeks.”

Junior Mamie Tomlin led the western team to a dominating 8-2 victory with her 75.5 score in horsemanship. Her performance earned her honors on the day. Seniors Ashley Kennedy and Courtney Whitacre and freshman Lauren Halvorson all added wins in the discipline.

Junior Rachel Houchin and sophomore Christy McElreath both scored a 75 in reining, the highest of the day in the discipline. Junior Caroline Daniels and freshman Jenna Blumer also picked up points in reining to give the Cowgirls a 4-1 team victory. Houchin received honors for her ride.

Jordan White led the hunterseat, picking up a win in both equitation on the flat and equitation over fences, including a career ride on the flat that saw her score a 99 out of a possible 100 points. The junior picked up honors for her ride. Senior Alice White also picked up two head-to-head victories on the day, one in each discipline. Freshman Samantha Elser picked up the first win and of her collegiate career with a 90-point ride in equitation over fences.
