Cowgirls Shutout Mean Green 7-0
STILLWATER, Okla. — The No. 25 Oklahoma State softball team defeated North Texas 7-0 in their home opener on Wednesday afternoon at Cowgirl Stadium. Senior Anna Whiddon picked up her eighth win as the Cowgirls improved to 11-5.
Whiddon threw six scoreless innings and allowed just one hit while striking out eight and is now 8-2 on the season. Freshman Kat Espinosa threw the seventh inning and retired the batters in order, striking out one.
Freshman Amy Graham was a perfect 2-for-2 on the day with a walk and two runs scored. Senior Katelyn Bright went 2-for-4 in the game with three runs batted in. scored one run in the first and second innings and it wasn’t until the sixth inning that their bats got hot.
Graham started off the inning with a walk and advanced to second when the Mean Green second baseman mishandled a ball hit by Megan Castle. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Chelsea Garcia. Graham scored as Sam Heinlein hit into a fielder’s choice and an error was made by the catcher.
Reigning Big 12 Player of the Week, Mariah Gearhart loaded the bases with a bunt single and scored on the next play as Bright hit a double to right field that cleared the bases. Julie Ward scored Bright two batters later with a double down the right field line.
North Texas is now 5-7 on the season and their starting pitcher Ashley Lail is 2-2. Lail threw all seven innings giving up six hits for no earned runs, struck out four and walked four.
