Cowgirls Upset Bears, Fall to Huskies

In the first game of the day against California, the Bears lead 2-0 after the second inning when Vernae Sevilla hit a two-run shot over the left field fence. However, pitcher Anna Whiddon was able to hold Cal to just two more hits the rest of the game.
The Cowgirls rallied in the sixth inning to take the lead. Mariah Gearhart led off the inning with a single and was followed with hits from Katelyn Bright and Hamilton to load the bases. Then everyone safely advanced a base on an error by the Bears second baseman to make the score 2-1. Breana Casaus pinch-ran for Hamilton and scored on a ground out by Megan Castle. Sammy Jo-Diffendaffer was running for Julie Ward and she came home on an -single by Brown.
Whiddon picked up her sixth win of the season and threw seven innings giving up two runs off four hits, walking one and striking out six. Jolene Henderson picked up her second loss of the season for Cal (9-4) and gave up eight hits for no earned runs, struck out five and walked one.
then went to battle against the defending national champion Washington Huskies (11-1). The Huskies got off to an early 3-0 lead against the Cowgirls. They scored from an -single and a two -double. However, starting pitcher, Kat Espinosa, did manage to strike out three batters to end the inning.
Oklahoma State rallied in the second inning and scored two runs from an -ground out by Chelsea Garcia and a sacrifice fly from Kelsey Anchors. was able to hold UW to three runs until the fifth inning. Washington scored two runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, including a pair of two-run home runs.
Baily Harris started in the circle for Washington and gave up two runs off two hits and walked two. Danielle Lawrie came in to pitch in the third inning and held the Cowgirls hitless until the bottom of the seventh. Anchors and Gearhart each singled to the outfield and Bright loaded the bases when she reached safely on a fielder’s choice. Hamilton stepped up and single to center field to score the final two runs of the game.
Lawrie got the win and improves to 9-0 on the season. Espinosa fell to 3-2.
