Daughters of the American Revolution Honor Two Bixby Students
Daughters of the American Revolution Wealaka Chapter sponsors American History essay contests each year for students in grades 5 -12. This year Wealaka Chapter’s winner was Bixby student Rylan Hunt in the 6th grade contest. The title was “The Women’s Suffrage Campaign.” Rylan’s essay was submitted to the DAR district chairman for district judging. The district is 14 chapters. Rylan won second place in district He was presented his second place certificate and check by Wealaka Past Regent Carolyn Thornton at his Bixby North Intermediate “Call to Excellence” assembly on May 6.
Bixby High School JROTC Cadet Ashlynn Johnson was awarded the DAR Outstanding Cadet Bronze medal by Wealaka Vice Regent Sherry Gamblin at the Marine Corps JROTC Awards Ceremony on May 2.
Recipients must have distinguished him or herself through outstanding leadership, honor, service, courage and patriotism. Wealaka Chapter is proud to sponsor this award for an outstanding cadet each spring.
DAR members come from a variety of backgrounds and interests, but all share a common bond of having an ancestor who helped contribute to securing the independence of the United States of America. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible to join.
