The first electric bicycle store in the greater Tulsa area opened in August at the Jenks Riverwalk Crossing.
Jenks High School graduate Matt Burkhart and his wife, Katherine, decided to open up a Pedego Electric Bikes location after riding the bikes in California earlier this year. Pedego Electric Bikes was founded in 2008 in California.
The energizing feeling of riding an electric bike is hard to describe, Matt Burkhart says. But once you’ve ridden one, you understand.
Burkhart was especially moved when he saw the effect the electric bike ride had on his mother, who is in her mid-60s and suffers from health issues.
It allowed her to ride a bicycle for a few hours, something that she had not been able to do for many years.
“She was glowing,” he says. “To see how it made her feel is a lare reason why I wanted to do this (open a store).”
The Pedego bikes allow riders to put out as much or as little effort as desired.
The bicycles feature various settings that allow riders to accelerate by using a throttle or to add acceleration assistance through the pedals. Maximum speed is between 20 and 25 miles per hour.
The store offers bikes both for purchase and rentals.
