Farrell Shatters Sooner Open Record In 1,500m

NORMAN, Okla. – Freshman Tom Farrell shattered a meet record by running a 3:49.69 in winning the men’s 1,500 meters to highlight Oklahoma State’s effort at the Sooner May Outdoor Open Saturday at the University of Oklahoma.

The previous record was 3:55.92 run last year by Tulsa’s Mark Davidson last year. While Farrell’s performance Saturday was solid, it was short of the personal-best 3:42.92 that he ran at the Arkansas Twilight meet last week.

He was the only Cowboy to compete at the Sooner Open Saturday, but there were a handful of Cowgirls that suited up for the event, all of whom competed in field events.

Junior Clarissa Andrews posted a mark of 5.80 meters in the long jump to place third and had a season-best 12.37-meter leap in the triple jump to take fourth in that event. She was joined in the long jump by freshman Jessica Murphy, who took fifth with a jump of 5.39 meters.

In the women’s discus throw, Alyssa Henrichs placed ninth with a season-best toss of 38.86 meters. Senior Julie Rader was 10th with a mark of 38.30 meters.

Henrichs also competed in the hammer throw and was eighth with a 37.43-meter heave. Teammate Jessica Lewis was ninth with a mark of 32.00 meters.

Oklahoma State returns to action when it competes at the 2010 Big 12 Championships in Columbia, Mo., from May 14-16.
