Flores Leads OU Past Iowa State
AMES, Iowa – The 13th-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team defeated Iowa State in a pair of games Saturday at the Southwest Athletic Complex. The Sooners (29-8, 3-1 Big 12) won the first game 2-0 and the second 3-2 after fending off a seventh-inning Cyclone rally. ISU falls to 22-15 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Oklahoma returns to action Wednesday evening against Oklahoma State. The Sooners and Cowgirls meet at 7 p.m. CT in Stillwater.
Game One: No. 13 Oklahoma 2, Iowa State 0
Keilani Ricketts threw her 15th complete game this season and Amber Flores hit her school-record breaking 49th career home run as the Sooners prevailed 2-0 in game of one of the doubleheader. Flores finished the game 3-for-4 with a home run and two singles. Dani Dobbs drove in Oklahoma’s first run, scoring Chana’e Jones who had reached on a fielder’s choice. Jessica Shults drew two walks.
Ricketts struck out 12 batters, just one shy of her season high. She allowed two hits and one walk against the 25 batters faced.
Game Two: No. 13 Oklahoma 3, Iowa State 2
Haley Nix got OU on the board in the fourth inning with a solo home run, her ninth of the season. Wendy Trott then singled to score Dobbs who reached on a single down the left field line. Flores added a third run in the fifth with her second home run of the day.
The Cyclones added two runs in the bottom of the seventh when pinch runner Amandine Habben and pinch hitter Dalyn Varela scored to cut into the OU lead before the game ended.
Michelle Gascoigne recorded a season-high 12 strikeouts. Gascoigne threw her seventh complete game of the season, allowing two runs on six hits.
Flores ended the weekend hitting .714 (5-for-7) with two home runs and a 1.571 slugging percentage. She drew one walk in those seven at-bats and recorded a .750 on-base percentage.
