FUN TIMES: Students from across the city gathered at the PSO Reading Tree for National Read Across America Day, an annual literary event in honor of children’s book author Dr. Seuss’ birthday. The event celebrated with special story times led by a diverse list of local guest readers.

Celebrate National Read Across America Day at Gathering Place was held March 2 for students from across the city at the PSO Reading Tree for a literacy-based event sponsored by the AEP Foundation on behalf of Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO). National Read Across America Day is celebrated annually on March 2 in honor of children’s book author Dr. Seuss’ birthday, with hopes of creating and celebrating a nation of diverse readers.

“Read Across America Day was filled with opportunities for children to celebrate literacy and practice important skills, all while gaining exposure to stories that strengthen connections in our community,” said Sarah Van Zandt, Director of Education and Programming for Gathering Place. “We were proud to offer a diverse line up of special guest readers representing many languages and cultures.”

As a part of the Explore & Imagine program at Gathering Place, Read Across America Day at the park celebrated the joy of reading with special story times led by a diverse list of guest readers at the PSO Reading Tree. Story times celebrated a variety of cultures and languages with new stories and new readers rotating every 20 minutes. Other Read Across America Day activities included literacy games, giveaways, and more with emcee DJ Phil The VIB3S.

“PSO was excited to be part of Read Across America Day at Gathering Place,” says PSO President and Chief Operating Officer Peggy Simmons. “Reading to a child sparks a young mind to experience new ideas and instills creativity and confidence for a bright future.”

Read Across America Day celebration at Gathering Place at the PSO Reading Tree was held with activities free to the public thanks to the Explore & Imagine program at Gathering Place.
