Gearhart and Thomas Named Big 12 Softball Weekly Award Winners
Irving, Texas – Mariah Gearhart (Oklahoma State) and Chelsea Thomas (Missouri) have been named Big 12 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, it was announced. This is the first career honor for Gearhart and second for Thomas.
Player of the Week
Mariah Gearhart, Oklahoma State, Jr., Third Base, Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista
Gearhart had at least one hit in every game played last week as she finished with a .467 batting average (7-for-15), seven runs and three RBI. She also notched a double, a sacrifice hit and two stolen bases. Against No. 13 California, she was 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base to help the Cowgirls earn the 3-2 upset. Gearhart is tied for first in the Big 12 with 17 runs scored on the season.
Pitcher of the Week
Chelsea Thomas, Missouri, So., RHP, Pleasantville, Iowa/Pleasantville
Thomas went 3-0 on the weekend with wins against No. 4 Michigan and No. 18 UL-Lafayette. The right-hander struck out 26 batters and walked just one on her way to an ERA of 2.67. She threw two complete games and six innings of relief against Radford, fanning seven and walking none. After walking a batter in the second inning of the Michigan game, Thomas is on a 19-inning streak without allowing a walk. She was named the NFCA Leadoff Classic Most Valuable Player for her performances.
