Golden Hurricane Men’s Tennis Dominate Memphis In 6-1 Rout

TULSA, Okla. – The No. 35-ranked University of Tulsa men’s tennis team put together a dominating effort against Conference foe University of Memphis in a 6-1 rout Friday night inside Case Tennis Center.

The tandem of sophomores Grant Ive and Alastair Barnes got things started on a high note for TU as they played at No. 1 doubles for the first time this year and defeated No. 52-ranked David O’Hare and Joe Salisbury 8-4.

This was the second ranked opponent that has fallen at the rackets of Ive and Barnes this spring, and the duo now owns a 4-1 mark in 2011.

Sophomore Marcelo Arevalo and freshman Japie De Klerk continued to gel as they cruised past Jordan Smith and David Henry 8-5. The victory wrapped up the doubles point for Tulsa and gave Arevalo and De Klerk a perfect 2-0 mark together.

Junior Rusty Turpin and sophomore Clifford Marsland teamed up in doubles for the first time in their respective careers. The duo broke serve twice, and they were eventually able to capture the 9-8 (7-4) victory over Leon Nasemann and John Taylor.

Tulsa won four of the six singles matches in straight sets, led by No. 44-ranked Arevalo, who made quick work of Smith 6-4, 6-4.

No. 96-ranked Marsland found his groove in a monster way as he was ripping winners all over the court en route to a dominating 6-4, 6-2 victory over Salisbury.

Barnes pushed his singles record to 3-1 with a 7-5, 6-3 win over O’Hare. He fell behind 4-1 in the opening set, but he hit his stride from there and captured 12 of the last 16 games.

Ive had his way with Nasemann, winning 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), and De Klerk continued the torrent start to his career with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Taylor.

De Klerk is now 5-0 in singles action and 3-1 in doubles play during his brief stint with the Golden Hurricane.

The lone match that went the way of the Tigers was at No. 5 singles, where sophomore Tristan Jackson fell in a super tiebreaker to Jonny Ferrer 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7)

Tulsa will hit the road for the first time this spring as the team will travel to Louisville, Ky., Jan. 29 for a 3 p.m. meeting with No. 18-ranked Ole Miss. The match is the first round of the 64-team National Team Indoor Championships event.

If Tulsa wins its two matches in Louisville, then the team would next travel to Seattle, Wash., for the round of 16.
