The first annual Cup was a success. The Cup is a high school hockey tournament featuring Broken Arrow, Jenks, the Tulsa Comets and Union hockey clubs and was played at the Center in December.
All the teams played at very high levels. The Union Redskins won the tournament after a first round defeat over archrival Jenks 5-3 and a nail biter of a championship defeat of Broken Arrow. Union prevailed 2-1.
Highlights of the tournament included great offensive efforts from all teams. However, outstanding defense defined the tournament.
Notably, Berent Ostervold recorded a hat trick in B.A.’s first round rout over the Comets and Colby Evans scored three goals and added an assist in Union’s win over Jenks.
B.A. goalie Skylar Allen accounted for 31 saves in the championship.
Union’s goalie and tournament , Brandon Smith accounted for 41 saves in the first round match against Jenks and made clutch stops to stave off a Broken Arrow power play in the waning minutes of the championship match.
