Gundy, Oklahoma State Announce Football Signees
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy has announced the signing of 27 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent.
Several of the major recruiting services consider the new class of Cowboys among the best group of newcomers in OSU history.
OSU’s class is headlined by two of the nation’s top recruits on the offensive side of the ball. Quarterback J.W. Walsh from Denton (Guyer) Tex., and running back Herschel Sims of Abilene, Tex., are both ranked among the best in the country at their positions and are considered among the top 15 players in the state of Texas.
The 2011 class, however, is slanted toward defense with 16 of the newcomers scheduled to begin their careers on that side of the ball. Eight are expected to contribute on offense. There is one kicker in the class and three under the “athlete” heading.
“We have a very balanced class with considerable depth at the defensive line position,” said Gundy.” We have a number of guys who we expect to play as true freshmen.
“This is a group of quality individuals with high character. They are good student-athletes and we’re excited to have them in our program.”
Oklahoma State continues to remain a recruiting force in Texas with nine of the top 100 players in that state signing with OSU. Overall, 19 Texans signed with OSU, along with three student-athletes from Oklahoma, three from Georgia and one from Arkansas and Kentucky. With the addition of the 2011 class, Oklahoma State now has eight players from Georgia on its roster heading into spring drills.
The Oklahomans that are joining the program include Glenpool safety Isaac Maselera, Mustang receiver and Parade All-America selection David Glidden and Sand Springs offensive lineman Michael Bowie.
The new class includes four junior-college players and 23 from the prep ranks. Three of the four junior-college athletes and two from high school are already attending class at OSU and will participate in spring drills.
OSU went heavy in the defensive line with seven of the newcomers designated for duty at defensive tackle or defensive end, including two of the transfers. Linebacker was another point of emphasis with five joining the program.
