Guthrie Green Opens Successfully

OUTDOOR ATTRACTION: The Tulsa Youth Symphony performed on Guthrie Green at the opening ceremonies on Sept.9, 2012, followed by a performance by the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra. The audience enjoyed a wonderful experience of fine music, excellent weather and lots of fun.

George Kaiser Family Foundation held the opening ceremony for the Guthrie Green park on Friday, Sept. 7. The park, which is located at 111 E. Brady St., is be focused on special events, activities and music that showcase a diverse combination of local, regional and national acts.
Entertainment following the opening ceremony featured Salsabor, Tulsa Playboys and Brave Combo. Sonny Landreth, Paul Benjaman Band and other artists performed throughout the weekend. Open Eye Figure Theater, Tulsa Children’s Museum and Fab Lab Tulsa hosted activities for families. The opening weekend concluded Sunday, Sept. 9 with performances from The Wailers and Tulsa Symphony Orchestra.
“Everyone, from the construction workers to the people getting ready for our first season of events, worked very hard to get ready for the Guthrie Green opening,” says Stanton Doyle, George Kaiser Family Foundation senior program officer. “The opening featured a diverse range of musicians and family activities, and we hope that it properly reflects the role the Guthrie Green will play in the Tulsa arts community. We see the Green as a conduit through which the local arts community can reach new audiences and help promote downtown Tulsa as a local and regional destination for art lovers.”
In addition to arts and entertainment, the Guthrie Green incorporates wellness programming into the park’s lineup. The downtown partners with Guthrie Green to host free group exercise classes, which began Sept. 11. The also provides free health screenings and biometric assessments during opening weekend.
“George Kaiser Family Foundation has transformed an area in the Brady Arts District to a community gathering space that continues to foster the arts in our community,” says Tulsa Mayor Dewey Bartlett. “Guthrie Green is a wonderful addition to downtown Tulsa and will complement the many new developments in the Brady Arts District.”
