OU LEGENDS: From left former OU quarterback Jason White, Hutcherson YMCA Executive Director Gwen Roberts and former OU tailback Steve Owens announced the fifth annual Oklahoma Heisman Golf Fore! Kids Classic to be held May 21 at the Cedar Ridge Golf and Country Club. White and Owens also presented Roberts with a signed football and 50 signed pictures for her facility.

The fifth annual Oklahoma Heisman 2007 Golf Fore! Kids Classic will be held May 21 at the Cedar Ridge Golf and Country Club located in Broken Arrow. Oklahoma Heisman winners Steve Owens and Jason White and Tulsa Sports Charity Director Tommy Thompson met with the media April 12 to announce the upcoming event.

Proceeds raised from the golf tournament will benefit At-Risk Youth and Teen Programs at the W.L. Hutcherson Family YMCA located in North Tulsa. The Hutcherson Family YMCA has three programs geared towards teens: the Minority Achievers Program, the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) and the Rites of Passage Program.

Minority Achievers is a youth supported network that links minority business professionals with North Tulsa Youth. It provides inspiration and encouragement to youth through services such as mentoring, tutoring, shadowing, career workshops and community service.

YAC members are youth who assist in planning activities, recruiting members and discussing needs in the community.

The Rites of Passage Program provides an opportunity for youth to interact with each other and a positive adult role model. Through monthly workshops, middle-school youth are given a forum to discuss topics that affect their daily lives.

“We want young people to leave here with a sense of belonging and empowerment,” Hutcherson Family YMCA Executive Director Gwen Roberts says.

Individual sponsorship is $450 and includes being assigned a member of a team, green fees, golf cart and lunch. A team sponsorship is $1,800 and includes a celebrity player added to the team as a commemorative item included in the tournament gift. A portion of all entry fees is tax deductible.

Tulsa Sports Charity is also sponsoring the second annual 2007 Celebrity Poker Classic at Cherokee Casino in correlation with the Golf Fore! Kids Classic. The Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournament, featuring some of the best poker players in the world, will be held May 20 as part of Cherokee Casino’s Scotty Nguyen Poker Challenge. Participants will have the opportunity to win up to $7,500 in cash prizes, including bounty prizes for eliminating celebrity competition.

“I’m a better golfer than I am a poker player, but anytime I can be involved in organizations that benefit kids, I’m there,” White says.

In addition to benefiting the Hutcherson Family YMCA, proceeds from both events will also benefit the Steve Owens Foundation and Tulsa Sports Charities endowment scholarships at the University of Tulsa and Oklahoma State University.
