Hurricane Reigns In Season Opener, Prep For Showdown With No. 19 California
TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa men’s tennis team posted identical 7-0 sweeps over both Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Oral Roberts University Wednesday inside Case Tennis Center to open the 2011 spring campaign.
The Golden Hurricane did not drop a set in any match as the home team simply outmatched the visiting Lions and Golden Eagles.
TU was led by sophomore Alastair Barnes, who was a perfect 4-0 on the day. He defeated UAPB’s Eduardo Luque 6-3, 6-3, and he also cruised past ORU’s Dmitry Suslov 6-3, 6-4. Barnes teamed up with fellow sophomore Grant Ive and defeated UAPB’s David Gomez and Tito Bonadonna 8-2. The TU duo also dispatched of ORU’s Mikhail Trukshanin and Matthew Tansil 8-1.
Ive won his lone singles match in a 6-4, 6-1 rout over Bonadonna.
Freshman Japie De Klerk made his Golden Hurricane debut and lost just four games in his two singles matches. He defeated Gomez 6-1, 6-0 and took down Tansil 6-1, 6-2.
De Klerk also competed in doubles against the Golden Eagles. He and junior Rusty Turpin blew past Matthew Prevost and Elliot Butay 8-0.
Turpin met Prevost in singles action, and easily defeated the ORU foe 6-0, 6-1.
The No. 22-ranked doubles tandem of junior Ashley Watling and Clifford Marsland backed up their preseason rank with two dominating performances. They had no problem taking down Hugo Gomez and Luque 8-0, and they had their way with Suslov and Dario Beslic 8-1.
Watling, the No. 89-ranked singles player in the nation, defeated Hugo Gomez 6-1, 6-0 in his lone singles match of the day. Marsland, the No. 96-ranked singles player in the NCAA, defeated Trukshanin 6-1, 6-2.
Sophomore Tristan Jackson won both his singles matches by identical 6-1, 6-0 scores. He took down UAPB’s Jorge Villacis and ORU’s Beslic.
Junior Patrick Collins defeated Butay of ORU 6-0, 6-1 in his lone match of the day.
The Golden Hurricane will begin a treacherous two-match set at 6 p.m. Jan. 13, when the No. 19-ranked University of California comes to Case Tennis Center.
